Backpack & Daypack Sizing Guide
Backpack & Daypack Sizing Guide
A properly fitted pack carries more comfortably, stays stable on the trail and helps distribute weight where it belongs. Use this guide to measure your torso and hips, confirm your APEX fit range and fine-tune your pack before heading out.
01 Quick Fit
Your APEX Fit RangeAll APEX X34, X24-H and X24-X packs use the same unisex, one-size fit. Start with your torso length, then confirm that your hip measurement is within the hipbelt range.
Your height alone does not determine backpack fit. Torso length is the primary measurement for confirming whether an APEX pack is within your fit range.
02 Measure Your Torso
The Key Pack-Fit MeasurementFor the most accurate measurement, use a flexible measuring tape and ask another person to help.
How to Measure
1. Find your C7 vertebra. Tilt your head slightly forward. The prominent bone at the base of your neck is your C7 vertebra.
2. Find the top of your hip bones. Place your hands on your hips with your thumbs pointing toward your spine. Imagine a horizontal line connecting your thumbs.
3. Measure your torso. Measure along the natural contour of your spine from the C7 vertebra down to where it meets the imaginary line across the top of your hip bones.
Two people of the same height can have different torso lengths. Use your measured torso length when checking the APEX fit range.
03 Measure Your Hips
Confirm Hipbelt FitThe hipbelt is designed to sit around the upper part of your hips so it can help stabilize the pack and transfer load comfortably.
How to Measure
1. Locate the top of your hip bones. Place your hands on your hips and feel for the upper edge of your hip bones — the iliac crest.
2. Wrap the tape around your hips. Keep the measuring tape level as it passes around the top of your hip bones.
3. Check the measurement. This measurement may sit higher than the waistband of your pants. Compare it with the APEX hipbelt fit shown here.
04 Fit Your Pack
Adjust in the Right OrderMake your final fit adjustments with a representative trail load in the pack. An empty pack can feel very different from a loaded one.
Position the hipbelt around the top of your hip bones and tighten until comfortably secure.
Tighten the shoulder straps so they follow the natural contour of your shoulders without excessive pressure.
Adjust the sternum strap to comfortably stabilize the shoulder straps without restricting normal breathing.
Fine-tune the remaining adjustment straps until the loaded pack feels stable, balanced and close to your body.
Walk around for several minutes with the loaded pack. Make small adjustments until the pack feels secure and natural without excessive movement, pressure points or strap discomfort.

06 Final Fit Check
Before You Hit the TrailBefore setting out, load your pack with approximately the gear and weight you expect to carry and confirm the following.
- Hipbelt is secure. It sits around the top of your hip bones and feels supportive without uncomfortable pressure.
- Shoulder straps follow your shoulders. They sit comfortably without obvious gaps or concentrated pressure points.
- Sternum strap feels comfortable. It helps stabilize the shoulder straps without restricting breathing.
- The pack stays close to your body. The load feels stable and does not sway excessively as you walk.
- Nothing pinches, rubs or restricts movement. Walk, bend and move naturally before heading onto the trail.
Pack fit is personal. Body proportions, clothing layers, load and individual comfort preferences can all affect how a backpack feels. Re-adjust your pack whenever your load or clothing changes significantly.
